Connecting to Wired (Ethernet) Network in Residence Halls

Rivier University allows students to connect wired personal devices such as laptops, game consoles and computers to the Rivier network inside their dorms. You will need to send IT the device’s MAC address so that we can register your device and allow it onto the wired network.

What is a MAC address and how do I find it?

A MAC address is programmed into every device that has internet capabilities. Essentially it is just a unique ID number for the device, a unique ID number that cannot match the millions of other network devices out there in the world. A MAC address consists of 12 alphanumeric characters usually separated by a colon or dash. Examples: 08:00:d4:f3:dd:8a, or 3d-22-77-ab-d3-hl. A MAC address can also be called a “hardware ID”, or “physical address”.

Finding the MAC address depends on the device, using DuckDuckGo or Google is recommended. Search terms can be as simple as “How do I find the mac address on my pc?”, “Where is mac address on Xbox?”.

Send IT the MAC Address

Email itsupport@rivier.edu with your name, building & room number, device MAC address and device type (PC, Apple, Xbox, Playstation, etc). You can send multiple MAC addresses in one email, as long as you identify each device. Example: MAC address 1 = your laptop, MAC address 2 = your Xbox. IT is looking for the “Wired MAC address”, devices that can be wired or wireless contain two MAC addresses, one for wired and one for wireless.

Reminder: No Routers, Wireless Access Points, Please!

It’s great if you want to bring your PCs, gaming consoles, smart TVs, etc. to campus. Please do not bring any kind of Wi-Fi/Ethernet routers, wi-fi extenders or anything of the sort. It can affect the internet negatively for yourself or even the students next door to you, and the engineering team will be very upset!

I’m Lost!

Email itsupport@rivier.edu and IT will help you.
