What Computer/Laptop Should I Buy?

I am a new student looking to purchase a new laptop or computer.

Congratulations, Raider. Welcome to Rivier! We have compiled the most common questions and answers surrounding computer purchases for new students.

Recommendations from the IT department:

  • Consider a laptop over a desktop as you may wish to take your computer to class. (Note: Some instructors do not allow laptop use in class. Check with your instructor.)
  • The IT department does NOT recommend having just an iPad or tablet. These devices lack physical keyboards and most students find them insufficient for participating in discussions or taking online exams through Canvas (our LMS).
  • The IT department strongly encourages students to avoid purchasing a Chromebook. Chromebooks have significant limitations on what software they can run. However, a Chromebook is still a better option than an iPad or tablet.
  • Windows or Mac? The choice is yours. (Note: The IT help desk is much more knowledgeable about Windows.)
  • Please consider purchasing a laptop with a built-in webcam for Zoom and web conferencing. You may also buy a USB webcam.
  • Do consider purchasing an extended warranty that covers accidental damage. Even if you are careful, your roommates and colleagues may not be.
  • Consider purchasing a laptop that will last you through the duration of your time at Rivier University. However, this does not mean that you need to purchase beyond your means.

Does Rivier University recommend a specific computer brand? Are there discounts?

  • Rivier University has partnered with Dell Inc. to offer students special pricing on laptops and other computer hardware.
  • Every student has different needs and desires. Some prefer light travel-friendly laptops, others prefer gaming systems.
  • You may wish to visit a big box store to compare models and get a feel for the different screen sizes, weight, and keyboard/touchpad feel.

Do some academic programs outline the minimum specifications of a computer?

  • Not currently. Please check with your program dean if you have any questions. Rivier IT suggests looking at the ‘standard’ laptop models available on www.dell.com/rivier.

Does Rivier University sell computers or computer accessories?

Does Rivier University offer a discount on software?

  • Yes! Rivier students are entitled to a free Microsoft 365 subscription which includes access to the Office suite. Please see the related article “Get Microsoft 365” below.

Should I purchase a printer for my dorm room?

  • Rivier University has printers and copiers available for student use at a low cost per page. Students are given a free print allowance that refills every semester. Most students find it more economical and practical to print to university printers. We even make it convenient to print from a computer lab or from your own computer–and from anywhere on campus! See this KB article for more info on printing.

Does the University have computer labs?

  • Yes. Computer labs are available in Regina Library, Sylvia-Trottier Hall, and Benoit Education Center. The lab hours vary.
  • Regina Library and the Science and Innovation Center also have many places for students to work with their own laptops, complete with power outlets.
